Things I do in Irony: The "Saved by the Bell" Edition

Yesterday at church a man gave an elaborate powerpoint presentation (complete with fancy screen, projector, and lazer pointer) on the evils of technology. What he had to say was very good, but the irony of his overuse of technology was not lost on me. Yet sometimes I wonder if the things I do or say in so-called "irony" are really ironic.
For example,

I went through a period of "ironically" watching "Saved by the Bell" in high school. Was this REALLY ironic?

Or did I secretly LOVE watching A.C. Slater and Jessie--such an unlikely couple!--duke it out? The fact that I can sing the lyrics to most of "Zack Attack's" songs makes me wonder....

It may have been ironic to watch "Saved by the Bell," but did I really HAVE to watch "Saved by the Bell: The College Years"?

Did I?

And is it ironic, or just sad, that I can still repeat the chant that the natives sing in honor of Screech in the special episode when they are in Hawaii for Jessie's dad's wedding?

"manalayo, manalayo, manalayo, hukumanalayo SCREECH!"

Sidenote: look at how far Screech has come from his nerdy, geeky days on the show:

And where is the irony in the fact that I obtained most of my education on the evils of drug abuse from the poignant episode in which Jessie gets hooked on pep pills?

"I'm so excited, I'm so excited...I'm so....scared" she cries as she admits to having a problem.

I may have laughed at the silliness of the show, but I think irony turned into obession when I had these special edition stamps made:

And who agrees that Lisa did not get enough camera time? Come on! Who's with me here?

Anyway, I SO loved that show...ironically, of course.

  1. The ironic thing is that I actually saw the poignant episode in which Jessie gets hooked on pep pills TODAY. And I actually sat down and watched it. No laundry folding or just in and out thing...I sat and watched. Perhaps not the irony, but in my case the relevance of your post is not lost on me.

I would have loved to have been in that lesson with the power point. Ha!

  2. I like Full House, ironically. Screech has come a long way.

  3. Robyn,
So then you know what I mean when I sing the "I'm so excited...so scared" thing. Good for you for taking some "Robyn time" and watching "the bell."
    Kacy,
I can see you liking Full House...ironically.

  4. Oh--I also watched 90210 for a while ironically. The thing about doing it ironically is that it allows you to still make fun of people who really watch the show--Those losers!

  5. I think it's ironic that you're happy to be back in AZ. But I very earnestly think that Marcy and Cousin Neil look great. Did they get married already?

Who was that girl who was on 90210 and Saved by the Bell? She was so lucky. She must live a life of irony.

  6. Emily,
I think you may be referring to Tiffany Amber Theisen. Oops. I've said too much....

  7. Did you know that in real life Tiffany Amber Theisen and Jennie Garth are best friends? But on the show they SO did not get along. I cried when Donna and David got married in the last episode. I also watched E! True Hollywood Stories on 90210 and got a little teary.

  8. Admit it, you cried when Kelly dumped Zack at the Masquerade Ball.

  9. Tiffani Amber Thiessen now goes by only Tiffani Thiessen. But there's so many Tiffanis out there, Tiff. Should have stuck with the original.

I was quite sad at the Kelly-Zack breakup, especially with the juxtaposition of Slater's and Jessie's romantic duet going on at the same time--that was the same episode, right? I don't know, I think it's probably been about 15 years since I saw that one!

  10. Oh yes, and this has nothing to do with irony, but I've always liked the names Lisa Turtle and Lark Voorhies. And no, Lisa didn't get enough camera time. I was so excited when they brought her back for a guest spot on The College Years.

  11. Weren't Jessie and A.C. singing "How am I Supposed to Live Without You? in the background??

  12. I can't resist:

Isn't it ironic? Don't you think?
    A little too ironic?

  13. I don't even know what to say. You have said it all here. I ironically went to the prom with a dude simply b/c I thought he was a Zack look alike. I know exactly what you are talking about with the masquerade ball (Gumby) and Zack Attack and the music video with Jessie and the "I'm so excited...I'm so scared"-fall-on-Zack-hug. Is it Zack or Zach? Have you noticed that Slater's real life brother often hosts New Years Eve stuff in Times Square? I heard A.C. went to jail? Can you tell me if that's true?

  14. The true irony is that Jessie played a good girl (except for the pep pills incident) and then quickly became a porn star once the show ended. Now she can hardly get REAL acting jobs because she has a bad reputation now. I saw it on E! The True Hollywood Story. That's how I know it's true.
