Since When Did the Book of Mormon Become a J.R.R. Tolkien Novel?

Has anyone noticed that you can now buy a replica of the sword of Laban at Deseret Book? Presumably it should be placed right next to "Harry's Wand," "Gimli's Axe" and the "Sword of Aragorn" in our curio cabinets. What next? Will we be able to buy a replica of the golden plates? Or a Urim and Thumim to wear around the house? I mean, sheesh! If it gets you interested in the Book of Mormon, I guess that's good. But isn't it a little, I don't know, weird? I mean let's not confuse scripture with fantastical lore, here. It's not Lord of the Rings, although it does have some awesome war passages and some very conflicted characters. It has some cool prophecies and some betrayal and a lot of heroism. It certainly ends with a bang. I guess it is a bit Tolkien-esque. Next thing you know, they'll be making a movie of it!

Oops. I guess I am the weird one now.

  1. I so agree! I chased the Living Scripture guy down the driveway with his tail between his legs! I'm not paying $30/movie when I can open the scriptures and get the real thing!

  2. Once when I was going to the movies (in TN), I walked past a theater showing the BOM movie. I walked in to take a peek and the theater was empty except for one family of 11.

I think it's a little crazy, too, but I secretly wonder what it's like.

  3. It's kind of like Christmas, it is sooooo commercialized that we have a hard time remembering what is really about.

  4. I know, thank goodness we have a living wizard to help us discriminate between fact and fiction.

  6. Which, by the way, is the worst movie I have EVER seen!

Don't you understand, the city will be destroyed!

If you haven't seen it, DON'T. It's uncomfortably embarrassing.

The script is even worse than Star Wars Episode 2. Imagine that.

Right on the money. Children have a hard enough time distinguishing fantasy and reality. Diluting the pot and combining the sacred in with the fictional when they are younger can effectively result in children doing the same thing when they are older. The last thing we want them to conclude is that it is all fantasy, lumping Christ in with Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy, etc.
