Day 17: "Chicken and Rice Plate"

Today is a Taiwan holiday, so Mike got to stay home from school. We decided to visit an ancient peoples and cultures museum just one subway stop (and a very long bus ride) away from our house.

The museum is right on the coast, so we also ended up at the beach. Between museum and beach, we "ate" "lunch" at a really weird and gross restaurant. Tell me something, when someone says the words "chicken and rice plate" to you, do you imagine a brown, flat chicken wing, a single chicken nugget, five french fries, one onion ring, one piece of broccoli, one ice cream scoop of rice, and a squiggle of ketchup neatly arranged together on a small white plate? Because I didn't before, but now those will be the only things that come to mind when I hear "rice" and "chicken" used in the same sentence. I mean, COME ON! Hazel spent most of the meal sticking a little toothpick in the ketchup, offering it to me ("try this!") and then eating it herself. Holden lay despondent in his chair, unwilling to touch even the fries. I picked at the fries, and Mike made his bravest and best effort by eating most of the chicken. The thing I hate is, you could have the awesomest day and see the awesomest things, but if the food sucks, it all sucks. At least, that's my philosophy.

Anywho, after "lunch" we went to the beach and saw some cool patterns (probably made by some sort of shrimp) in the sand,

started a small shell collection, and clucked our tongues at all the garbage and lack of care people seem to have for the environment (next thing you know, I'll be rinsing all my plastic wrap!!)
We also had the lucky opportunity to see a beached whale!!

HEH-LLO!

We felt so sorry for the whale that we took it home and fed it some pizza. Then we invited it to watch Bee Movie with us in our swanky apartment movie theater. We fear it may be with us indefinitely. Ah, me.

There are some things we will probably miss about our home here. Unfortunately, the words "chicken and rice plate" will always remind us of the bad times.

  1. I chuckled when I scrolled down to see the "beached whale" photo, and the guys wanted to see it also. You will be happy to know that they looked and looked, but could not find the whale! However, I can empathize!

  2. I didn't see a whale either.

I am so sorry about the horrible food/smells you are being subjected to while pregnant. You have my sympathies.

  4. You do look cute. I'm so excited for you to come home to good American food--you know, Taco Bell and Wendy's.

  5. I have been having day dreams about Wendys. Not to mention the daily obsession for Chick Fila that Holden and I are both struggling with. He told me the other day that the only things Taiwan needs are Chick Fila and rootbeer. Amen.
