Identity Crises

It's time for another hair blog. I mean, I don't talk about my hair ENOUGH on this blog, right? But seriously, I have been having several identity crises lately. Some of these crises involve jewelry--what kind of jewelry should I wear? Big, chunky, statement pieces, or dainty, delicate things? And if someone asks me what colors I like, what do I say? The only thing I know is that I prefer silver over gold. Dat all. This caused a lot of sweating and embarrassment when I went to see the "Pearl Lady" in Tienmu. Other crises involve the content and tone of my blog--should I switch to a more family-oriented blog and stop pretending that the world really cares about MY misadventures? Should I stop blogging altogether to pursue other worthy activities, such as Facebook? Should I just change my profile and layout? (See new profile and layout.)

But the most serious of crises has, of course, to do with my hair. Lately I have been wondering if I need a hair identity. For the past 29 years, my hairdentity has been that I HAVE no hairdentity. My hair changes several times year. I am not one of those people who always has short hair, or a bob, or long hair. I am never satisfied. The question is, do I NEED to be satisfied? Is my hairdentity simply one of CHANGE, not stagnation? Or, should I consider the fact that I am approaching 30? Does turning 30 mean that I need to settle down, become an adult, find a style that suits me, and stick with it? So many decisions! I look at photos of myself with very long hair and very short hair and neither is particularly attractive. But I AM NOT PARTICULARLY ATTRACTIVE in any form, so photos are not the best indicator. What do you think? I feel a poll coming on (perhaps it will be more widely voted on and understood than my last disaster about television aliases--another indication that I'm a blogging has-been and that I need to give up and switch to a more shallow mode of expression!!!) What should I do?

  1. I think you are stunningly beautiful and funny and perfect and you will love your 30's because no one cares what you look like. They just assume that since you are 30 you no longer worry about it.

  2. Woah. So, 30 is the end of the line for me? I was expecting to have some good lookin' years in my 30's. Thank heavens you cleared that up for me. Bring on the Mom Jeans!

  3. I also change my hair a lot looking for that perfect cut. The only time I have been truely happy with it is when I shaved it off. That is my suggestion, just make sure you don't have a bumpy head first.

  4. Although I wouldn't mind a family focus, I still enjoy regular doses of misadventures.

I've had the same haircut my entire life, except for shaving it all off twice. I guess that's pretty typical for males. Who know, maybe if it gets thin enough I'll just have to settle for the short buzz look someday.

  5. I think you should blog about whatever you want, whenever you want. I don't think your blog needs to have a particular focus unless you want a particular audience.

And, I also change my hair all the time--color, length, shape, etc. I kind of think I need the change. It makes me feel better when I am feeling sad or stagnant.

  6. I like the misadventures, but as Smash said, blog about what you like to. If you force it, you won't do it.
Also, I quite like the new layout!

  7. By "shallow mode of expression" you're talking about Facebook, right? Because, I mean, I find my child-centered blog fascinating and very cerebral.

Sorry about the placenta previa. That stinks.

  8. Oh, and I love the hair changes.

  9. I also change my hair often AND am almost 30...and therefore love to read about them on your blog...don't change a thing.
I also prefer silver over gold even though my wedding ring is gold because I got married as an infant when gold was still "the go-to ring metal of choice". I'm trying to not want a new wedding ring.

  10. I like reading your misadventurs. That's my vote.

And I am having a hair/identity/crisis as well (ask Kacy, we talk about my hair WAY TOO MUCH), so I'm no help other than to encourage you to keep mixin' it up. Plus, you're slender so your hair will always look good. Isn't it fun to talk about hair? (I'd better go call Kacy now.)

  11. I like the misadventures - it makes misadventures seem the norm! I liked your hair best shoulder length. At some age (certainly not 30!) I finally came to grips with the fact that I have thin, fine hair and so I have been forced into a rut that actually looks decent most of the time. Such are the 40s!

  12. Your hair looks good long or short or medium. I like not knowing what it will be every time I see you. Frequent change is a good hair identity (for you) if you ask me.

  13. I think you should blog whatever you darn well please. And 30 is NOT the end of the road or I would have been a gonner a long time ago. I've done the different hairstyle every few months too. After having the same long curly thing going on I switched it up about a month ago and have shoulder length and straight. Hey it's just fun to keep everyone (including yourself)guessing what you will look like. Sorry about the p.p. What a bummer! Say hi to Doug for me! Cami

  14. Blog what you want - it's yours. Facebook is just a popularity contest anyway. I think you are a very beautiful person, but I liked your hair best when it was a little shorter than shoulder length. That's just my opinion. I had a previa with Adam...are you doing okay? That can be VERY serious. Will you deliver in the US or there? I hope you don't mind me making myself at home on your blog. It is nice to get caught up on the state of "you". Oh, I tried red bean paste ice cream. Who ever thought beans and dessert should go together seriously doesn't understand the definition of sweet tooth.

  15. So I found your blog through Alisa Evans a month or so ago, and LOVE it. For what it's worth I remember when you cut your hair after moving to the Tucson area and thought it was adorable. You have a great voice-I really enjoy your misadventures. Thanks!

  16. I vote for more of the same--with everything. And, because you are thin and lovely, you really can do anything with your hair. Your hair always looks good in spite of what you think. Mine on the other hand. . .

  17. I know it is hard for the English Professor to admit but a picture is worth a thousand words. More photos! Stories are the best form of entertainment. DMP

  18. So you might think that I'm an absolute freak but we found your blog through Alisa. I don't even know if you remember us. We had that wonderful Thanksgiving dinner at your place in Tucson with the Broughs. I keep in touch with Alisa and Jana, but thats about it from Tucson. I love your blog, if only I could write like you! :) I promise we are not stockers, although it may seem that way. Hope all is going well.

  19. DMP,
I would love to put more pics on my blog, but unfortunately the internet here in our apartment makes it nearly impossible to upload even one photo onto my blog. Be patient. Come April 21st, I will be able to put up long-awaited photos of our time in Taiwan.

    Jodi,
Of COURSE I remember you and have been wondering what you guys have been up to. Where are you living now? Did you know that we are moving to Rexburg this fall?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Your kidding! We live in St. Anthony. Derek is finishing school at BYU-I and will be done in December but we will be here for awhile. How exciting, what are you coming to Rexburg for... Job? When will you be moving?

  21. Man, I would be so happy if I got 20 comments on one of my posts on my blog! You are one popular woman! And you should be. Your blog is my favorite one to read. Please keep up misadventures. I love it. You've even inspired me to consider starting a second blog, one that is just mine. Not many people would probably read it, but it would be a nice outlet for me to get my thoughts and opinions out. We'll see if I really do it, but thanks for the inspiration. Even though I'm a mom now, I'm still Alisa! It's good to remember.

And I like your hair long & short. I like to change mine a lot too. It's nice to have a change.
